5 Ways Companies Can Treat Your Temp Agency’s Temps during the Holidays.

Posted on Dec 16, 2019

The busy holidays are upon us, and temporary employees will play a vital role helping companies meet the demands of the holiday season.  Temps work on long-term assignments through the temporary staffing agency, lasting longer than the client initially thought would be required.  A temp agency should understand worker compliance issues such as co-employment and advise its clients to refrain from inviting their temps to participate in various company holiday events.

1. The Office Holiday Party

Companies view the holidays as an office get-together time, sometimes inside or outside of the office.  A temp agency recommends that its clients not invite its employees to the holiday parties.  After all, the temp agency is the employee’s employer of record.  A temp agency is retained for it’s professional staffing services. Let the agency provide the work for hire services. We’re not good at providing socialites or party goer “stand ins.”

2. The Company Holiday Luncheon

Many companies reserve department luncheons outside of the office, at a restaurant or catering hall.  Such a task requires transporting the temp ‘to and from’ a venue in a car – either in the company’s employee vehicle or the temp’s own car.  Adding alcohol to the mix serves as an opportunity for a car accident.  Even if a luncheon is held inside the company’s boardroom or cafeteria, injuries from hot spills of foods and beverages by servers can occur.  Accidents not only cost the temp agency, but why share the legal liability. Instead, treat your temp to free holiday lunch in their cubicle!

3. The Office Holiday Grab Bag Gift Exchange

While exchanging gifts is a nice way to show your appreciation to coworkers during the holiday season, it can make a temporary employee feel awkward, especially if they don’t know company employees that well or their finances are already stretched to the limit.  Don’t feel bad excluding temps because they’ll breathe a sigh of relief and not feel pressured to participate.  Instead, the temp agency suggests your company conceive its own discreet Secret Santa, or, better yet, a recipe card of pics and instructions, tossed into a bin to share and try out at home.  Who knew sitting at the next desk could be a covert chef that can concoct a decadent dish for all to share!  Yumm!

4. Public Acknowledgement by the Company

A temp agency can request its client to provide a few achievements of the temporary employee during the holidays for recognition on the staffing agency’s website or Facebook page (the temp’s official employer of record).  Showing appreciation is a nice way for a company to treat a temporary employee during the holidays.  Everyone needs a positive boost now and then!

5. Company Thank You Letter

A temp agency may ask its client to write a simple personalized “Thank You” letter to the temporary employee during the holidays for the work and progress in supporting the company’s bottom line.  The note should offer positive and constructive comments, reiterate the company mission, and give the name of an employee to turn to with any on-the-job questions or concerns.  Gratitude!

There is more than one way to thank a temporary employee during the holiday season. While holiday parties are usually the common outlet for employee appreciation during the holidays, utilizing a personal “thank you” approach can make the difference and keep your company in compliance with the temp agency.

A Temp Agency may help increase workplace friendships and boost morale

Posted on Nov 27, 2019

Companies with happily connected employees are likely to be successful and develop camaraderie with coworkers. They can become relaxed in a friendly environment and actually enjoy coming to work.  It uplifts the mood and boosts morale!  Partnering with a temp agency in your backyard such as Bergen County, New Jersey can help a candidate locate such a workplace.

Choosing a temp agency that has a large client base located in Bergen County with various corporate cultures enables a candidate to work with a recruiter who can make the best match.  They guide as the ‘go-between’ or ‘mediator’, pointing temps in the right direction.  The agency’s Recruiter has the expertise to match a temp’s skills and experience into a specific position because they are familiar with the internal corporate environment.  This awareness between client and temp agency empowers the transition of an employee’s soft skills into comfortable surroundings.

Creating close social relationships and having a best friend or two at work is comforting and relieves some of the day-to-day pressures.  Companionship helps an employee thrive through successful times and migrate through all the daily challenges that arise at work.   A positive alliance impacts an employee’s physical health as well.  A collaboration with coworkers helps an employee perform through difficulties, rather than just leaving the company dissatisfied.  It actually makes the day glide smoother.  Coworkers all tend to treat each other better after chatting and sharing interests over lunchtime.  Workers can gain a fresh perspective from personalities who are different from themselves.  A temp agency can help make the connection.

The benefit of a work friend goes far beyond lending a hand on a project.  It is important to have a go-to person at work as issues crop up.  If your friend leaves the job, you’ll have the perfect reference for each other.  Future opportunities may even emerge.

Temp agencies understand that, if an employee loves what they do, the outcome gives beneficial performance results to the employer.

Temp agencies also know that Gen Z’ers and Millennials hold the highest percentage of workplace friendships, as they seem to understand a basic need for bonding, sense of belonging, and human engagement at work.  They healthily consider coworkers as ‘work family’.  Positive friendships at work contribute to longer service to one company, reducing the desire to ‘job-hop’.

There seems to be a rampant sense of loneliness and depression among remote workers who work in a solitary environment, those not able to share face-to-face companionship at work.  Bergen County hosts a wide array of small and large companies.  Why not let a temp agency with a Bergen County presence make the right match.

A temp agency recruiter can be a conduit to the impossible. An agency follows up with employees, checks in, and monitors an employee’s connection to the company while gauging job satisfaction, acting as a barometer for a temp in supporting their success.

The Modern Age temp job through a Temp Agency in NJ is not your Granny’s Gig.

Posted on Nov 08, 2019

In postwar America, temporary jobs in NJ were created to fill a genuine need for businesses that needed help when their employees were sick, on vacation, or otherwise not able to work for short periods.  They were stereo-typically ‘bad’ jobs with lower wages, no benefits or job security.  In the 1970’s, they were lower-skilled positions in the industrial industry or female workers with typing and accounting skills.  In the 1980’s, a positive about-face took place with temporary (“temp”) jobs being viewed as a legitimate career, providing family-sustaining employment and the benefit of worker flexibility.  By the year 2000, 90% of companies supplemented their full-time staff with 3 million temporary employees.  In the State of NJ, 124,400 Temp Agency workers are hired weekly across 1,250 companies, fulfilling a sizable sector of American employment.  According to the US Census Bureau, “More than 500,000 temporary and part-time jobs are available as the Census Bureau ramps up hiring to conduct the 2020 Census next year.  Pay ranges from $13 to $30 an hour, depending on where you live”.

Today Temporary Agency workers who work at Temp Agencies in NJ are performing highly skilled tasks and utilizing their broadened range of educational qualifications and history of accomplishments.  Temps bring useful and professional skills for many reasons.  They may have been downsized or laid off from a corporation after years of successful contributions, company outsourcing, globalization, or technological changes – gone is the era of a lifetime career or a lifelong job.

Today’s modern temp or permatemp positions integrate the tech world in significant ways.  As an emerging career trend, a contractor, or temp, is not treated as a commodity, but as a professional, valued as much as a full time employee of the company.   While the unemployment rate is at the lowest since 1969, the US is reaching the tipping point of more open jobs than temps to fill them.  Temporary workers who work in NJ are reaping benefits of a multitude of open opportunities, often in companies of their own choice.  It’s not just about the job anymore, but more about how the company relates to the candidate.  Temp Agencies with a presence in NJ have shifted the mindset and treat a candidate more like a customer, heavily engaging and attracting this current smaller pool of candidates to their client’s companies.

Prior to placing a temp with a new client, the Temp Agency in NJ feels the importance of meeting with and touring the client’s facility, viewing firsthand live engagement of the team, especially in the department in which the temp will be working.  Staffing has evolved into a “try before you buy” status, which repeatedly proves successful for both the temp and the NJ Temp Agency.  It’s a cost-effective way to recruit and test abilities of a worker before transitioning them to full-time permanent.  The Temp Agency bears the burden of recruiting, payroll expenses, and workers compensation.

A company asks the Temp Agency to look for a temp who will create an environment of assimilation.  The company nurtures and treats the temporary worker as a valuable, beneficial and profitable team member of the staff.  At the same time, a strong Temp Agency with a presence in NJ encourages the temp, “If you work at a high level, you’ll raise your chances of being hired permanent”, and is always thrilled to hear from the temp, “I did it, I’m going Perm”!  One more success story.

The behind the scenes role of your employment agency.

Posted on Oct 17, 2019

A reputable employment agency builds an authentic connection with a candidate and helps the job seeker land that great job – simple as that!   Oh, the hard-to-believe stories we hear from candidates, from early morning to late evening.  Instinctively, we believe in people and often wonder how we hold out hope and keep the faith!  Recruiters at temporary employment agencies love what they do, and the rewards work both ways.

Simply stated, an employment agency endures those headaches to keep our client from getting one.  We’re kind of like the ‘Wizard of Oz’ behind the gold curtain pulling the strings.  Here’s a sneak peek into the behind-the-scenes role of a temporary employment agency.

After our staff searches feverishly for the perfect candidate, we perform deep skills assessments and conduct an in-depth interview.  The resume and Candidate Executive Summary are furnished to the Hiring Manager.  Once the client interview is scheduled, a Temporary Employment Agency Recruiter will prep them for their in person interview.  He or she will attempt to mitigate any uneasiness about the job by providing the job seeker clear expectations and performing a thorough mock “prep” interview in-person or via Skype.  The process allows a candidate to feel like they are in front of the client making a good first impression, showing off their personality, and avoiding asking the wrong questions.  After negotiating on the pay rate and inquiring about ‘any other’ job offers, the Temporary Recruiter checks off everything on the list, stays connected, and keeps close track of the candidate.

As a recent example of “using our secret sauce to place a quality candidate at our client’s front door”, this week a new client located the employment agency on our website, and we ventured into a search for the appropriate candidate.  Our search process brought us to a resume which showed each of the skills required for the new position.  A phone call to the candidate immersed into deep details uncovering each and every skill and computer program, how and when they were used in the most recent and past positions.  Our inquiry ensued into “how and why” those jobs ended.  As seemingly legitimate reasons unfolded, we asked the candidate to provide former employer references phone numbers, which were provided.  We investigated if each of those Supervisors still work in those companies, or their current whereabouts.  After receiving satisfactory and positive feedback, we proceeded with the submission of resume and Executive Summary or “bio” to client.  In the meantime, we met our candidate in person at the temporary employment agency to give a full orientation, onboarding of documents, discuss all of the job details, and clarify our expectations and rules to be followed while working as a temporary at our client.  At this time, we “prep” interviewed this candidate, as if in front of our client.

Before leaving, we requested the candidate to keep in touch with the employment agency until the client’s interview is scheduled and reiterated, “If you have any hesitation, or if anything occurs in the meantime, call us immediately”.  The interview took place, the client offered the position, and our candidate started the next day.  We followed up with the client, and the candidate is so far, a perfect placement.  Our Company’s secret sauce is how we get this quality candidate into our client’s front door!

Prior to a temporary employee’s assignment start date, verbal and written instructions are carefully provided – be on time, don’t miss a day, take the designated lunch break, follow dress code, don’t use a cell phone; in other words, be respectful and productive!

A Recruiter at a Temporary Employment Agency does not expect staffing to go smoothly all the time.  They take all the necessary steps and due diligence behind the scenes to provide the quality candidate that each and every client deserves.  A good Recruiter understands that they can only guide candidate to a certain extent.  When our secret sauce creates a bad batch, we move on and search for a better alternative candidate as quickly as possible.  When everything goes right, it is gratifying to match our best candidate with the best fitting client – the best day in the life of a Temporary Recruiter!

Tips on How to Answer 5 Tricky Interview Questions

Posted on Sep 04, 2019

Interviews can be pretty scary, especially when you are asked tricky interview questions that you do not know, or questions that you know should not be asked.

Try to stay calm and confident, no matter what is asked, and do not display body language that you are unnerved or upset.  It’s normal to experience a brain freeze during interview questions. Present the appearance that you are thinking of an example.  Some people are offered jobs even when the interviewer expects your difficulty answering each question.  He or she doesn’t need total perfection which may rebound and seem too rehearsed.

You can always ask the interviewer to “please rephrase the question” which will allow more time to interpret a scenario and give appropriate feedback.

Some interviewers skip regular questions and instead propose trickier ones to gauge your reaction, response time, and to observe how you communicate under pressure.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for uncomfortable interview questions, reduce some anxiety beforehand, and avoid total panic.

1. “When did you graduate college?”

This falls into the category of ‘asking your age’.  You may choose to answer or not answer or instead respond, “My work performance will not be affected by my age”.  You might also state that you’re not sure why the interviewer needs to know.

2. “What are your salary requirements?”

Take the time to research similar job’s salaries and benefits prior to the interview.  During the interview, try to hold back throwing out numbers.  If you already know what the job’s salary range is, you can simply answer, “I am aware of the salary range, and it falls within my requirement”.  If you don’t know the range, you can ask, “What is the salary range for this position”?  If it meets your need, your response can be, “With my experience and skills, I’m flexible and open to negotiation, in order to be paid properly”.

3. “What is your biggest weakness?”

The interviewer wants to know what you identify as a weakness and if you are even mindful that you have one.  Be humble, we all have them.  Give a particular example of how you solved something that you felt was not a strength, such as efficiency and time management, which ultimately improved your productivity on a job.

4. “Do you have a family?”

An interviewer cannot ask anyone’s their marital status or if their spouse works.  They also are not permitted to ask if you have children or any childcare situation.  They may ask if you have a pre-planned vacation or previously scheduled medical or dental appointment.  It is best to offer this information before the job begins so the employer anticipates and is not surprised by sudden absences.

5. “Why do you want to work here and why should I hire you?”

It is a good idea to do your research on the company, its values, and their mission statement.  Be further enlightened by reviewing the interviewer’s LinkedIn profile, if available.  Knowing his or her background and why they may have chosen to work in the company will give you an opportunity to discuss the company’s goals and what you can bring to the table.  Highlight your specific skills and in relation to the specific position.  Finally, if it feels as if the company will be a comfortable working environment, go ahead and express your interest in joining the organization.  If it feels uncomfortable to work in, you may simply wish to end the interview
